What is a Interleaved 2 of 5 (ITF) barcode?
Interleaved 2 of 5, or ITF, is a numbers-only barcode used on cartons, in warehouses and in distribution. It packs digits densely and prints well on rough materials like corrugated cardboard. ITF-14, the barcode on many shipping cases, is built on it.
Digits are encoded in pairs: the first digit of each pair is held in the bars and the second in the spaces between them. That is why the data must have an even number of digits. An optional modulo 10 check digit (weights 3 and 1) can be added, and it counts toward the even length.
What data can Interleaved 2 of 5 (ITF) hold?
Digits 0-9 only, with an even total length. With the check digit on, enter an odd number of digits so the check digit makes it even; if the length is wrong, we offer to add a leading zero.
Recommended size
Leave a quiet zone of at least 10 times the narrowest bar on each side. ITF can be misread when a scanner sees only part of it, so set a fixed data length in your scanner where you can.

Frequently Asked Questions
Digits are stored in pairs, one in the bars and one in the spaces. If your number is odd, add a leading zero; the generator offers to do this for you.
No. Interleaved 2 of 5 holds digits only. Use Code 128 or Code 39 if you need letters.
ITF is the general barcode type for any even number of digits. ITF-14 is a GS1 standard that always holds a 14-digit GTIN for cartons and has its own size rules.
Starting from the right, digits are multiplied by 3 and 1 in turn and added up. The check digit is the number that brings the total up to the next multiple of 10.
