US letters & flatsPostal Codes › USPS Intelligent Mail (IMb)
Postal barcodes help mail carriers sort letters and track parcels. Many are 4-state codes, where each bar is full height, short, or extends only up or only down, instead of using bar widths. This category covers codes for the US, UK, Australia, Japan, the Netherlands and Germany, plus international tracking numbers.
Use the barcode your postal operator or carrier asks for, with the data format they give you. For US letters use Intelligent Mail (IMb), for US parcels IMpb, and for international registered mail a UPU S10 number. POSTNET and PLANET are older US codes kept for legacy systems.
