What is a GS1 Digital Link QR barcode?
A GS1 Digital Link QR code is a QR code whose content is a web address that also carries GS1 product data, such as the GTIN, batch or serial number. Shoppers can scan it with a phone to open a product page, and checkout scanners can read the GTIN from the same code. It is a key part of the GS1 move to 2D barcodes at checkout, often called Sunrise 2027.
The link follows a fixed pattern: a domain, then pairs of Application Identifiers and values, like /01/09520123456788/10/ABC123. You can use your own domain or GS1’s id.gs1.org. During the move to 2D, keep the EAN or UPC barcode on the pack as well.
What data can GS1 Digital Link QR hold?
A web link that starts with http:// or https:// and contains /01/ followed by a GTIN of 8, 12, 13 or 14 digits. We check the GTIN check digit and offer to fix it if it is wrong.
Recommended size
Keep a quiet zone of 4 modules around the code. For phone scanning, about 2 x 2 cm is a common starting point; keep the link short so the modules stay large, and test on real packaging.
