What is a Data Matrix barcode?
Data Matrix is a square 2D barcode that fits a lot of data into a very small space. It is used to mark electronic components, machine parts, medical devices and small packages. It can be printed on labels or marked directly on parts.
The code is a grid of dark and light squares with a solid L-shaped border that scanners use to find it. Built-in Reed-Solomon error correction lets it read even when part of the code is damaged. One code can hold up to 3,116 digits, 2,335 letters and digits, or 1,556 bytes.
What data can Data Matrix hold?
Any text, numbers or URL, up to 1,556 bytes. We warn you as you get close to the limit.
Recommended size
Leave a blank margin of at least one module (one square) on every side; more is safer. The right size depends on how much data you store and on your scanner, so test a print before a big run.

Frequently Asked Questions
A 2D imaging scanner or a scanner app on a phone. Scanners that only read 1D barcodes can’t read it.
Both are 2D codes. Data Matrix needs less space for small amounts of data and is common in industry, while QR Code is more common for links aimed at the public.
GS1 DataMatrix is the same symbol with a special start character and data in GS1 Application Identifiers. Use it when a GS1 or healthcare rule asks for it.
Yes. Put one value per line or generate a number sequence, then download them or print a label-sheet PDF.
