What is a GS1-128 (UCC/EAN-128) barcode?
GS1-128, once called UCC/EAN-128, is the barcode used on carton and pallet labels across the supply chain. It carries data such as the product GTIN, batch number, expiry date, weight or a pallet’s SSCC. Retailers, distributors and logistics providers often require it on shipping labels.
Data is written as Application Identifiers (AIs): a number in brackets that says what follows, like (01) for GTIN, (10) for batch, (17) for expiry date or (3103) for net weight in kilograms. The brackets are printed in the text but not stored in the bars. A GS1-128 barcode can hold up to 48 data characters and should be no wider than 165 mm.
What data can GS1-128 (UCC/EAN-128) hold?
GS1 Application Identifiers in brackets, each followed by its data, for example (01)09520123456788(10)ABC123. We add or check the check digit for (01), (02) and (00), and check that dates such as (17) use the YYMMDD format.
Recommended size
For scanning in warehouses and distribution, use an X-dimension of at least 0.495 mm and bars about 32 mm tall. Keep a quiet zone of 10 times the narrowest bar on both sides.

Yes, if the GTIN or SSCC will be used by trading partners. You can test with sample numbers, but don’t ship goods with made-up GTINs.
