What is a Ultracode (color) barcode?

Ultracode is a 2D symbology published by AIM that uses colored modules instead of only black and white. Using several colors lets each module carry more information, so the code can be smaller for the same data.

Very few scanners can read Ultracode, because they need a color camera and specific decoding support. It is mostly of interest for experiments and evaluating color barcodes.

For anything that must scan reliably, use a black-and-white code such as QR or Data Matrix instead.

What data can Ultracode (color) hold?

Text, up to about 250 characters. We show how much capacity you are using.

Recommended size

Print in color on a white background with accurate colors, because the reader has to tell the module colors apart. Custom colors are not available for this type, since the colors carry the data.

Frequently Asked Questions

In Ultracode the colors themselves encode data, so they must stay exactly as defined by the standard.

No. A grayscale print loses the color information that the reader needs.

Support is rare. Test with your specific reader, and use QR or Data Matrix if you need broad compatibility.
