What is a GS1 DataBar Truncated Composite barcode?

DataBar Truncated Composite uses the low-height DataBar Truncated as its linear part and adds a 2D Composite Component on top. The GTIN-14 stays in the DataBar, and extra Application Identifiers like a date, batch or serial go in the 2D block.

Because the linear part is truncated, the whole symbol is shorter than the Omnidirectional composite, but it isn't intended for omnidirectional checkout scanning. It suits items scanned with imaging scanners, for example in pharmacies, labs or stock rooms.

What data can GS1 DataBar Truncated Composite hold?

(01) and a 14-digit GTIN for the DataBar part, then a | character, then GS1 Application Identifiers in brackets, for example (01)03612345678904|(11)990102.

Recommended size

Use it where height is limited and an imaging scanner is used. Keep clear space around both parts, and keep the 2D data short so the block above stays small.

Frequently Asked Questions

The linear part is much shorter, so the symbol takes less height, but it isn't meant for fixed checkout scanners.

An imaging scanner that supports GS1 Composite reads both. A linear scanner may read only the DataBar part.

No. The GTIN goes in the DataBar part only, and the 2D part holds the additional AIs.
