What is a DotCode barcode?

DotCode is a 2D symbology made only of isolated dots arranged in a checkerboard grid, published by AIM. Because no two dots need to touch, it can be printed reliably by high-speed inkjet and laser markers that can't produce solid squares cleanly.

It is used for marking products directly on fast production lines, such as cartons and cigarette packs. Its GS1 variant, GS1 DotCode, is used for tobacco traceability codes in the EU.

If your printer can produce solid modules, Data Matrix or QR codes have wider scanner support. Choose GS1 DotCode instead of plain DotCode when your data uses GS1 Application Identifiers.

What data can DotCode hold?

Text, up to about 450 characters. We show how much capacity you are using.

Recommended size

Leave a quiet zone of a few dot positions on every side. Print each dot clearly separated, and test-scan with the reader used on your line.

Frequently Asked Questions

Separate dots suit printers that fire individual drops or pulses at high speed. The code stays readable even if dots spread a little.

GS1 DotCode starts with an FNC1 character and holds GS1 Application Identifiers. Plain DotCode holds any text.

Most phone camera apps cannot. DotCode is usually read by industrial scanners and vision systems that support it.
