What is a Code One barcode?
Code One is one of the earliest 2D matrix symbologies, published as an AIM standard. It is recognized by a pattern of horizontal and vertical bars through the center of the symbol, and it comes in a range of sizes that can hold large amounts of data.
It has been used in industrial and healthcare applications, but today it is mostly found in existing systems. Many modern scanners have it disabled by default or don't support it.
Use Code One only when an existing process requires it. For new labels, Data Matrix or QR codes are better supported and easier to scan.
What data can Code One hold?
Text, up to about 2,218 characters. We show how much capacity you are using.
Recommended size
Leave a quiet zone around the symbol and print large enough that each module is clearly visible. Check that your scanner has Code One enabled before printing.

Frequently Asked Questions
It is a legacy symbology found in some older industrial and healthcare systems. New projects usually choose Data Matrix or QR instead.
Many scanners don't support it or have it switched off by default. Check the scanner's settings or manual.
Code One uses a central bar-shaped finder pattern, while Data Matrix uses an L-shaped border. Data Matrix is much more widely supported today.
