What is a USPS POSTNET barcode?

POSTNET (Postal Numeric Encoding Technique) is a legacy USPS barcode that encodes a ZIP Code using tall and short bars. It holds a 5-digit ZIP, a ZIP+4, or a ZIP+4 plus 2-digit delivery point, followed by a check digit.

USPS has retired POSTNET and replaced it with the Intelligent Mail barcode (IMb), which no longer qualifies mail for automation prices with POSTNET. For any current US mailing, use the USPS Intelligent Mail barcode instead.

This generator is useful for reproducing old artwork, testing equipment or education. It encodes the digits you enter and does not validate the address.

What data can USPS POSTNET hold?

Digits only: 5, 9 or 11 digits (ZIP, ZIP+4, or ZIP+4 with delivery point). Spaces are ignored.

Recommended size

POSTNET uses fixed bar heights and spacing defined by USPS. Print at the specified dimensions without stretching.
