What is a EAN-5 add-on (standalone) barcode?

EAN-5 is the 5-digit supplemental barcode printed to the right of an EAN-13 or UPC-A code. On books it commonly carries a currency digit and price. This type generates the add-on symbol on its own.

A standalone add-on is handy when the main ISBN or EAN-13 barcode is already in your cover artwork and you only need to change or add the price supplement. EAN-5 includes its own checksum, encoded in the parity pattern of its digits.

On its own, an EAN-5 symbol is not a product code. For a complete book or product barcode, use EAN-13 with a 5-digit add-on, which places both parts with the right spacing.

What data can EAN-5 add-on (standalone) hold?

Exactly 5 digits, 0-9. Spaces are removed.

Recommended size

Match the X-dimension and bar height of the main EAN-13 or UPC-A, and place the add-on to its right with the standard gap so scanners read both together.

It has no visible check digit. A checksum is encoded in the parity pattern of its bars and verified by the scanner.

Use the combined type when creating a full barcode. Use the standalone EAN-5 only when the main barcode already exists in your design.
