What is a EAN-2 add-on (standalone) barcode?

EAN-2 is the 2-digit supplemental barcode that sits to the right of an EAN-13 or UPC-A code on periodicals. This type creates the add-on symbol by itself, without a main barcode.

It is useful when the main code is already on your artwork and you only need to change the issue number, for example when printing a new magazine issue. The add-on uses a parity pattern derived from its value instead of a separate check digit.

An EAN-2 symbol on its own is not a product code and will not be read as one. If you need the main code and the add-on together, use EAN-13 with a 2-digit add-on, which positions both correctly.

What data can EAN-2 add-on (standalone) hold?

Exactly 2 digits, 0-9. Spaces are removed.

Recommended size

Match the bar height and X-dimension of the main EAN or UPC barcode, and place the add-on to its right with the standard gap so scanners read them together.

Frequently Asked Questions

It can be printed alone, but it only makes sense as a supplement next to an EAN-13 or UPC-A. Scanners normally read it together with the main code.

No separate check digit. Its two halves use a parity pattern based on the value, which scanners use to check the read.

Use it whenever you are creating a complete periodical barcode, since it generates both parts with the correct spacing.
