What is a EAN-13 + 2-digit add-on barcode?
An EAN-13 with a 2-digit add-on combines a standard EAN-13 product barcode with a small EAN-2 supplement to its right. It is used on magazines, newspapers and other periodicals, where the main code identifies the title and the add-on typically shows the issue number.
Periodicals usually use an EAN-13 starting with 977, which carries an ISSN. The add-on is a separate short symbol that holds two digits and is scanned together with the main code by retail scanners configured to read supplements. The EAN-13 check digit is required: enter 12 digits and it is added, or enter 13 and it is checked.
If the add-on needs to hold five digits, such as a book price, use EAN-13 with a 5-digit add-on. If you only need the small add-on symbol on its own, use the standalone EAN-2 type.
What data can EAN-13 + 2-digit add-on hold?
An EAN-13 number (12 digits, or 13 with the check digit) followed by a space and exactly 2 digits, for example 9771473968012 12. The EAN-13 check digit is calculated or verified automatically.
Recommended size
Follow EAN-13 sizing: keep the full quiet zones on both sides and leave the standard gap between the main code and the add-on. Do not shrink below what your printer and retailer accept.
