What is a EAN-13 + 5-digit add-on barcode?
An EAN-13 with a 5-digit add-on joins a standard EAN-13 barcode with an EAN-5 supplement printed to its right. It is best known on books, where the main code holds the ISBN as an EAN-13 starting with 978 or 979 and the add-on can carry a suggested retail price.
In the common book price convention, the first add-on digit indicates the currency and the next four give the price; for example, a leading 5 is used for US dollars, and 90000 means no suggested price. The add-on is a separate symbol read together with the main code by scanners that support supplements. The EAN-13 check digit is required and handled automatically.
If you are starting from an ISBN, you can also use the ISBN barcode type. For magazine issue numbers, use the 2-digit add-on instead, and use the standalone EAN-5 type if you only need the add-on symbol.
What data can EAN-13 + 5-digit add-on hold?
An EAN-13 number (12 digits, or 13 with the check digit) followed by a space and exactly 5 digits, for example 9781565812314 52250. The EAN-13 check digit is calculated or verified automatically.
Recommended size
Follow EAN-13 sizing: keep full quiet zones and the standard gap between the main code and the add-on. Book barcodes are usually printed on the back cover at or near the standard EAN-13 size.
