What is a ITF-14 (GTIN-14) barcode?

ITF-14 is the barcode printed on outer cartons and cases. It holds a 14-digit GTIN that identifies the case, for example a box of 12 bottles, rather than the single item. Warehouses and distribution centers scan it; it is not meant for the retail checkout.

A GTIN-14 usually starts with an indicator digit from 1 to 8 for the packaging level, followed by the first 12 digits of the item’s GTIN-13 and a new check digit. It is printed in Interleaved 2 of 5 with a thick frame, the bearer bar, which helps on rough cardboard and stops partial reads. The check digit uses weights 3 and 1.

What data can ITF-14 (GTIN-14) hold?

13 digits, and we add the 14th check digit; or all 14 digits, and we verify it. A leading (01) is removed, and shorter numbers can be padded with leading zeros.

Recommended size

GS1 calls for an X-dimension between 0.495 mm and 1.016 mm, bars at least 32 mm tall and a quiet zone of at least 10 times the narrowest bar on both sides. Where you can, print it on two sides of the case.

No. ITF-14 is for cases in the warehouse; use EAN-13 or UPC-A for items scanned at checkout.

Yes. A GTIN-14 is based on your GS1 company prefix, and your customers look it up in their systems.

It is the thick frame around the barcode. It spreads printing pressure on cardboard and stops scanners from reading only part of the code.
