What is a EAN-8 barcode?

EAN-8 is the short version of EAN-13, made for products too small to fit a full retail barcode, such as lipsticks, gum or small cosmetics. It holds an 8-digit GTIN and is scanned at checkout like any EAN code.

The 8 digits are a GS1-issued number with a check digit at the end. GS1 issues EAN-8 numbers one at a time, and only when an EAN-13 really doesn’t fit the pack. The check digit is calculated the same way as for EAN-13, with weights 3 and 1.

What data can EAN-8 hold?

7 digits, and we add the 8th check digit; or all 8 digits, and we verify it. Only digits are allowed, and if you type 12 or 13 digits we suggest switching to EAN-13.

Recommended size

At 100% size an EAN-8 is 26.73 x 21.31 mm with an X-dimension of 0.33 mm, and it can be scaled from 80% to 200%. Keep a blank margin of 7 times the narrowest bar on both sides.

Yes, for anything sold in stores. For internal tests, any 7 digits will give you a barcode that scans.

It is the last digit, calculated from the first seven with weights 3 and 1. Enter 7 digits and we calculate it for you.

Only when an EAN-13 won’t fit on the pack, even at a reduced size. Otherwise EAN-13 is the standard choice.
