What is a GS1 DotCode barcode?

GS1 DotCode is DotCode with an FNC1 start, so its data follows GS1 Application Identifier rules. It keeps DotCode's dot-only layout, which suits high-speed inkjet and laser printing on production lines.

It is accepted for unique identifiers in EU tobacco traceability, where codes are printed directly on packs at line speed. The data can combine identifiers such as (01) GTIN with other AIs your scheme requires.

If your printer can produce solid modules, GS1 DataMatrix is the more common GS1 2D choice. Use GS1 DotCode when your marking equipment or your traceability scheme calls for it.

What data can GS1 DotCode hold?

GS1 Application Identifiers in brackets, for example (01)00012345678905. We add or check the GTIN check digit and check that dates use the YYMMDD format.

Recommended size

Leave a quiet zone of a few dot positions on every side and keep dots clearly separated. Test with the scanners used in your verification process.
