What is a GS1 DataMatrix Rectangular barcode?

GS1 DataMatrix Rectangular is the rectangular form of GS1 DataMatrix. It holds the same GS1 data, such as the GTIN, batch and expiry date, but is wide and short instead of square, so it fits narrow labels on vials, ampoules, syringes and slim cartons.

Like the square version, it starts with an FNC1 character and stores data as GS1 Application Identifiers, for example (01) GTIN, (17) expiry date and (10) batch. Rectangular sizes hold less data than the largest square ones, so keep the content short.

Use the square GS1 DataMatrix when you have the space or need more data, and GS1-128 if your scanners only read linear barcodes.

What data can GS1 DataMatrix Rectangular hold?

GS1 Application Identifiers in brackets, for example (01)03453120000011(10)AB12, up to about 98 characters. We add or check the GTIN check digit and check that dates use the YYMMDD format.

Recommended size

Leave a quiet zone of at least one module on every side. Check that your scanners read rectangular Data Matrix, and plan space for human-readable text if your sector requires it.

Most modern 2D imagers do, but check older equipment before switching.

No. Both use the same GS1 Application Identifiers and FNC1 start; only the shape and capacity differ.
