What is a BC412 (SEMI) barcode?
BC412 (Binary Code 412) is a linear barcode developed by IBM for the semiconductor industry and standardized by SEMI. It is used to mark silicon wafers with an identification code, often by laser.
All bars in BC412 have the same width; data is stored in the width of the spaces. This makes it well suited to laser marking, where producing bars of exactly controlled widths is difficult. It encodes digits and uppercase letters, and the symbology optionally includes a check character.
BC412 is a specialist code. Outside wafer and semiconductor tracking, use Code 128 for alphanumeric data or Data Matrix for marking small parts.
What data can BC412 (SEMI) hold?
Digits 0-9 and uppercase letters A-Z. Lowercase is offered for conversion to uppercase; spaces and symbols are not allowed. The check character is optional.
Recommended size
Size the code to the marking area defined by your wafer or tool specification, and keep a clear quiet zone on both sides. When printing on labels, test with the reader used in your process.

Frequently Asked Questions
Its bars all share one width, which suits laser marking on wafers. SEMI standardized it for wafer identification.
No. It encodes uppercase letters and digits only. Lowercase input can be converted to uppercase.
Turn it on if your wafer ID specification or reader expects it. Otherwise leave it off so the reader does not report an extra character.
