What is a EAN-13 barcode?
EAN-13 is the barcode printed on retail products around the world and scanned at checkout. It holds a 13-digit GTIN that identifies one specific product, such as one size and flavor. Shops, marketplaces and distributors use it to look up the product and its price in their own systems.
The number starts with a GS1 company prefix, followed by an item reference and a check digit at the end. The check digit is calculated with weights 1 and 3 so scanners can catch misreads; enter 12 digits and we add it for you. For products sold in stores, the number must come from GS1, not be made up.
What data can EAN-13 hold?
12 digits, and we add the 13th check digit automatically; or all 13 digits, and we verify the check digit. Spaces and hyphens are removed, and only digits are allowed.
Recommended size
At 100% size an EAN-13 is 37.29 x 25.93 mm, with an X-dimension of 0.33 mm, and GS1 allows 80% to 200% of that size. Keep the blank margins (11 times the narrowest bar on the left, 7 on the right) and don’t cut down the bar height.

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes, for products sold in shops or on marketplaces. Your local GS1 organization issues the company prefix; creating a barcode does not register a number.
It is the last digit, calculated from the first 12. Digits in even positions are multiplied by 3, everything is added up, and the check digit brings the total to the next multiple of 10.
Yes, for tests and mock-ups. Numbers starting with 20 to 29 are reserved for in-store use, and the prefix 952 is reserved by GS1 for examples, so neither clashes with real products.
UPC-A is a 12-digit version used mainly in the US and Canada. A UPC-A number with a 0 in front is the same as an EAN-13, and checkout scanners read both.
